DIY Lava Lamp

Groovy! Team GCM member, Caroline, shows you how to make a DIY lava lamp! Caroline originally made this video for USF’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities event, Fiesta by the Bay, and today we’re sharing it with you!

Materials:

A clean, open container
Oil (Baby Oil or Canola oil works best)
Water
Food Coloring
Effervescent Tablets
Stirring Utensil

Directions:

  1. Fill your container half full with water
  2. Fill the rest of the container with oil, leave some space for the reaction.
  3. Place 3-5 drops of food coloring in the container, stir the mixture.
  4. Drop a tablet into the container and watch the reaction!

Did you know? Oil and water don’t mix with one another due to the polarity of their molecules. To learn more about polar vs. nonpolar molecules, watch Team GCM member Essence’s video on the Chemistry of Hand Washing
