Chemistry of Handwashing


Team GCM Member and Field Trip Educator, Essence, is our handy-dandy chemist today to teach you about the chemistry of handwashing. Essence will tell you all about polar and nonpolar molecules in the handwashing process using LEGOs, then get into a fun polar/nonpolar art demonstration, and a demonstration of great handwashing tips using paint!

Polar/Nonpolar Explanation Materials:

  • Box of LEGOs with three distinct colors

Polar/Nonpolar Art Demonstration

  • Whole milk (preferred) or 2% milk
  • Water-based food coloring
  • Dish soap
  • Q-tip (optional)
  • Shallow bowl or plate

Directions:

  1. Add the milk to a shallow bowl or plate until it covers the bottom. Using a light-colored plate or bowl can be helpful so you can see the colors more clearly.
  2.  Add 3-6 drops of food coloring to the bowl. Be sure not to stir or disturb the plate or bowl.
  3. Dip the tip of your finger or your cue tip into some dish soap and place it gently on the surface of the milk. 
  4. Watch as the water-based food coloring moves away from your finger or cue tip. Paint a picture using this technique and repeating it on different areas of the surface of the milk.
