DIY Flour Paint & Flower Activity Sheet

Team GCM Member, Sara, got artsy with her twin kiddos and made homemade paint using flour and other simple ingredients from their pantry! This art activity requires supplies and ingredients you can find right in your kitchen and only takes about 30 minutes! After you’ve made your flour paint, use our flower activity sheet to test out your new paints!

Materials:

1/2 cup of flour
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of salt
Dye, food coloring, or spices
A container (egg carton or small cups work too!)
Tablespoons
Paintbrushes
Flower Activity Sheet or paper

Instructions:

  1. Mix flour and salt together. Add water slowly until your desired consistency. The goal is for it to be thick like paint!
  2. Spoon your mixture into your individual cups or egg containers, then add primary colors (red, yellow, blue) to 3 cups.
  3. Teach your kiddos about secondary colors by mixing for green (yellow and blue), purple (red and blue), and orange (red and yellow) and then test your paint on our Flower Activity Sheet. If you’d like to make pastel colors, just add more flour to your flour paint!

If you don’t have dye or food coloring, substitute for spices like paprika, turmeric, or pesto, to create some cool colors! And the best part? Paint is edible, so it’s safe for all kiddos, including babies!
