Hi friends! Join Ashley today as she teaches us about an artist named Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was an African American artist and teacher known for her color, abstract paintings. As you watch the video and view Alma Thomas’ artwork, take a moment to think about what colors and patterns you see in her art. How do you feel when you look at her paintings?
Follow the steps below to create your own Alma Thomas-inspired art at home! And be sure to join us at the museum to continue learning about Alma Thomas and other influential Black leaders in our Family Play Project area!
Materials:
- Paper to tear and to glue your artwork on
- Glue
- Crayons, markers, colored pencils (optional)
Directions:
- Decide what type of abstract design you will create. Will you create a work inspired by Alma’s lines or perhaps challenge yourself to create an abstract scene that reminds you of something you see in our physical world, like mountains!
- Tear your paper into different shapes and sizes to create your artwork.
- Start creating! Glue your torn pieces of paper onto your base piece of paper creating any abstract design you want!
