Bringing Literature to Life

We are thrilled to bring The Pigeon Comes to Tampa!: A Mo Willems Exhibit to GCM January 19-May 12. Visit the whimsical world of Mo Willems and his cast of lovable characters, including best friend duo Elephant and Piggie, faithful companion Knuffle Bunny, and The Pigeon, the wily city bird best known for his antics in Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Here, simple stories inspire hours of play and reveal the rich emotional lives of Mo’s characters. The challenges of growing up, like learning to make yourself understood, or figuring out what it means to be a good friend, are gentle themes throughout. Along the way, children get to make their own art, surprises abound, and every exploration ends in fits of laughter!

“There are tons of reasons you should visit this exhibit and still more reasons to love Mo Willems.” Says Kate White, Director of Marketing & Communications at Glazer Children’s Museum. “As a mom, I love reading these stories to my kids. They giggle every time Wilbur the Naked Mole Rat gets dressed and they love the Pigeon’s sense of adventure and sarcasm. Even I laugh out loud reading the antics of best friends Elephant and Piggie. More than just fun bedtime stories, these books teach key skills for social and emotional wellness. The illustrations are clean and simple, yet full of expression and unlike typical narrative-style children’s books, many of these stories are told through the character’s dialogue and inner monologue. Without a narrator to explain the nuances of what’s happening, kids must interpret nonverbal cues, like facial expressions and mannerisms, to understand the characters’ actions and emotions. Can you imagine if everyone had these skills? Mo Willems is helping us raise emotionally intelligent kids who will grow up to create a more empathetic world. And what could be better than that?”
