The Pigeon Came to Tampa!

  • Marketing and Communications Director, Kate White, and Creative Director, Lauren Colombo had a blast visiting WFLA's helicopter, Eagle 8, with The Pigeon.

Oh, how the time flies! It’s been a little over two weeks since The Pigeon flew the coop here at GCM and we miss it already. From January 19-May 12, we had the pleasure of having The Pigeon Comes to Tampa! A Mo Willems Exhibit here at Glazer Children’s Museum. Kiddos got to jump right into the whimsical world of Mo Willems and his cast of loveable characters, including best friend duo Elephant and Piggie, faithful companion Knuffle Bunny, and The Pigeon, the wily city bird. The exhibit saw hours of play from excited little ones from all over the city, with its interactive areas like the hot dog launcher, Wilbur the Naked Mole Rat’s fashion show, and drawing table.

GCM was ecstatic to bring this colorful world and cast of characters to Tampa because of the connection Mo Willems’s stories have with readers. Mo Willems’s simple stories inspire great conversations with little learners about the challenges of growing up, how to be there for your friends, and other gentle themes like thanking those who are important to you. Our favorite story is the silly Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! with the city bird himself and his hilarious hijinks.

In bringing this world to life here in Tampa, GCM wanted to show The Pigeon around to hotspots and must-see locations around the city. Our Marketing and Creative team, along with the bird himself, visited some of the coolest spots in Tampa and didn’t miss a photo-op along the way! From penguins at ZooTampa to Ferris wheels at the Florida State Fair to a chilly Morning Skate with the Tampa Bay Lightning, The Pigeon (and our team members) got into the silliest situations! My personal favorite adventure was bringing The Pigeon to the Strawberry Festival. It was such a blast to take pictures of this cute character at an event that I grew up going to all the time! So many kids recognized The Pigeon, even adults! It made them so excited to come to visit the museum to see the exhibit in person.

We are so thankful for getting to share this experience with all of our guests, members, and visitors. Hilarious hijinks, silly situations, and friendly fun were had throughout the exhibit’s run, in front of and behind the camera! To see all of The Pigeon’s adventures, follow #ThePigeonComesToTampa
